Welcome to Water NZ

Please peruse our information and resources that we here at Water NZ provide for you on water filters, water filtering, water coolers and the reverse osmosis water filter amongst others.

Most modern homes put in water filters these days due to the necessity of wanting to have clean hygienic and above all good tasting water to drink. We have changed the way we view water in New Zealand and realise that we need to have a minimum intake daily to stay healthy and not dehydrate. It is common practice to connect a water filter to the household supply in an effort to ensure clean clear, sweet tasting water.

Drinking water filters can work through a variety of processes. A mechanical filtration system provides top quality drinking water by passing water through a graded density pre-filter which traps the sand, dirt and other fine particles that alters the look, taste and smell of the water.

Water NZ Filter Options

These are the main types of water filter in NZ that are commonly used.

For home use, granular activated carbon filters or GAC filters, carbon block resin or CBR filters, micro-porous ceramic type filters, metal alloy filters and ultra-filtration membranes are some of the commonly used. There are also some composite systems using two or more of theses filter technologies to provide better filtration.

Water filters in NZ for home use come in different types using different processes. All these do however have the same function which is to get rid of any chemicals, metals and other contaminates for health and safety benefits.

Water NZ Water Coolers

You will find that a lot of the water coolers which supply water in places such as hospitals will be connected to the main water supply and have a good quality inline water filter that will supply a continuous supply of great drinking water. The filters do need to be changed regularly as they pass a lot of drinking water through the system. The most common used and also the cheapest water filters are made from charcoal. Carbon charcoal made from waste products such as coconut husks are very effective in filtering out the majority of the harmful contaminants found in most tap water.

Other types of water filters available through Water NZ

The system of reverse osmosis water treatment process is a more effective but also more expensive way of removing impurities in water. This reverse osmosis process was originally used to remove salt from sea water in submarines but it has now been adapted to home drinking water treatment systems. Reverse osmosis filters have at least two different water tanks which are divided by an impermeable layer that does not allow any contaminants through. Normally, water that has a low contaminant concentration will flow towards the higher contaminant concentration in order to balance the level on both sides of the water tanks.

Water NZ acknowledges that there are also many newer types of water filters which are appearing onto the market and they are proving very effective. Science has found ways to use magnets, electricity and far infra red to remove impurities from water. While these may be great filtration systems, most of them are too costly and physically too large for home use. Unless you have a high level of concern and a robust budget, your best options are charcoal or reverse osmosis water filters.
